Bridging the gap between academia and practice' is a need gaining significant attention, as highlighted by Barnett (2024) in a recent editorial for the Academy of Management Perspectives. He notes that while "rigorously relevant scholarship is not easy to conduct, it is far from an insurmountable quest.” There is certainly truth in this statement - however, it is also important to acknowledge that climbing this hill (or bridging this gap) often comes at a cost. Many young scholars, in particular, are caught between meeting organizational demands - top-tier journal publications, teaching loads, and the ever-growing administrative burden - and a desire to pursue a fulfilling career, engaging in work beyond cultivating their own academic reputation. In this webinar, we discuss whether you can have both, and what the benefits and risks are of building a career at the intersection of academia and practice. We explore the challenges of designing research aimed at informing practice, and the limitations we face in providing practical recommendations. Additionally, we'll talk about how our backgrounds as researchers can serve as valuable assets in family business consulting. Join us to learn more about navigating a career that bridges the gap between academia and practice and discover what this path can offer.
