The International Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA), the National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU), and the Taiwan Institute of Directors (TWIoD) cordially invite you to attend the 2017 IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan from November 14th to 17th, 2017.
The purpose of the IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan is to advance the family business scholarship by encouraging (1) theory-driven studies to enhance the theoretical foundation of family business research (2) dialogues between family business scholars and researchers who are new to the study of family businesses (3) academic and practitioner participants to raise bold and interesting questions (4) research incorporating the social, cultural, economic, and institutional uniqueness of Asia-Pacific nations. (5) studies of family business pedagogies and teaching cases.
The 2017 IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan is an intellectual forum for academic researchers and family business owners. This conference aims to bring together practitioners, scholars, and family business members to explore new ideas and to inform the developments of best practices.
The theme of 2017 IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan is “Entrepreneurial Family Business: Its Strategy, Transition, and Management in Global Economy”we encourage scholars, educators, family business owners, and practitioners from diverse disciplinary traditions, theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, and professional background to participate.

The purpose of the IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan is to advance family business scholarship by encouraging (1) theory-driven or problem-driven studies to enhance the theoretical foundation of family business research, (2) dialogues between family business scholars and new researchers in family business, (3) academic and practitioner participants to raise bold and interesting questions, (4) research incorporating the social, cultural, economic, and institutional uniqueness of Asia-Pacific nations, and (5) studies of family business pedagogies. This global conference aims for practitioners, scholars, and family business members to explore new ideas and present the development of best business practices. We invite papers that speak to the broad conference theme, “Entrepreneurial Family Business: Strategy, Transition, and Management in a Global Economy” on all aspects of family business research. In addition to topics in strategy, transition, globalization, we welcome papers in succession planning, leadership, governance, entrepreneurship, family relationships, family dynamics, family psychology and sociology, history, economics, finance, marketing, and accounting and topics that lie at the intersection of these and other interrelated disciplines. We especially encourage doctoral students to present their work.
Following the theme for the 2017 IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan, “Entrepreneurial Family Business: Strategy, Transition, and Management in a Global Economy”, we encourage papers with organizational, managerial, and educational implications that help family businesses sustain an entrepreneurial spirit and growth. Potential contributions to this conference will address but not limit to the following questions:
- What factors affect the strategic choices of family businesses?
- What factors affect entrepreneurship in family businesses?
- How do family businesses maintain entrepreneurship over time?
- In what situations are family businesses more innovative and entrepreneurial?
- What are the contributing factors of transition performances in family businesses?
- What are the main driving forces of family business transition in this global economy?
- How do national cultures and/or social institutions influence family businesses and their entrepreneurial strategies?
- What is the impact of Asian or other cultural traditions and conditions on the decisions of family businesses?
- What is the impact of globalization on the succession, transition, entrepreneurship, and strategic decisions of family businesses?
- The coping strategies of family businesses in an increasingly globalized economy.
- Evidence-based pedagogical studies on family business education.
- Development and applications of consulting tools for family businesses.
Submission Guidelines and Languages
Paper submissions, in English or Chinese, can take the form of full-length paper (35 pages max., double space, including everthing) or extended abstract (1500 words max.). On top of the length mentioned, please also prepare another short English abstract (no more than 250 words) to be used for the submission process.

Taiwan Institute of Directors
Taiwan Institute of Directors was established in 2012 by entrepreneurs and academic scholars. Positioned as a think tank, we play the role of advisors to corporations and firms, with focus on family shareholder, board of directors, and corporate within family businesses. In the past years, Taiwan Institute of Directors have played major role in planning and coordinating Chinese Family Business Forum in Taipei, Shanghai, and Beijing. We’ve held multiple focus training workshops, aimed to improve family members’ succession and strategic decision quality. Some of the topics explored included internationalization, business transformation, family succession, and corporate sustainability. In short, Taiwan Institute of Directors is dedicated to working closely with government, industry, and academia to lead the discussion on family business issues and support family businesses in their needs.

For 2017 IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan, Taiwan Institute of Directors partners with College of Management, National Sun Yat-Sen University, to host the event. National Sun Yat-Sen University has been a thriving institution of learning since 1980. It is located in Kaohsiung City and home to a campus that borders on beautiful sandy beach. Its College of Management is the first program in Taiwan to receive accreditation from AACSB and has been actively involved in the development of family businesses in Taiwan and Asia for over twenty years. The College of Management has a full-time faculty of over 90 members and 2000 students, all dedicated to advancing research and teaching in management.
The theme for 2017 IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan will be “Entrepreneurial Family Business: Its Strategy, Transition, and Management in global Economy”. The date of this conference will be arranged from November 14-17, 2017. We look forward to facilitating the interaction among scholars, family business members, service institutional professionals, and media members from Europe, Americas, and Asia to further research and understanding in our theme topics.

Journal of Family Business Strategy
Journal of Family Business Strategy, the official publication of IFERA, was established in 2010, and has been accepted to appear in the Thomson Scientific Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) with an impact factor of 1.088. Journal of Family Business Strategy publishes research that contributes new knowledge and understanding to the field of family business by addressing all aspects of how family influences business and business influences family. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Long term strategies, growth vs. survival strategy
• Processes and outcomes of corporate entrepreneurship

Journal of Family Business Strategy supports studies that introduce new paradigms into family business entrepreneurship domain. Sun Yat-Sen Management Review (In Chinese)
Sun Yat-Sen Management Review was established in 1993, one of the earliest established management journals in Taiwan, and has been accepted to appear in the Taiwan Social Sciences Citation Index (TSSCI). Sun Yat-Sen Management Review has been ranked as the top-tier level A journal in the areas of Humanity and Social Science in 2011-2014. Sun Yat-Sen Management Review, a comprehensive multidisciplinary management journal, welcomes research in all aspects of management. Sun Yat-Sen Management Review emphasizes emic research, highlighting theoretical perspective and multi-discipline integration. There is special emphasis on managerial and strategic implications, and less focus on technically-oriented research. Sun Yat-Sen Management Review is an international journal that adopts two anonymous peer reviewer processes and two referrer recommendations to ensure publication quality.
Sun Yat-Sen Management Review collaborates with 2017 IFERA Global Conference and announces a special issue on “Entrepreneurial Family Business: Challenges and Strategy”. The special issue editors are Professor Yung-Chih Lien, from International Business of College of Business at National Taiwan University, Professor Yunshi Liu from Business Administration of College of Management at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, and Associate Professor Hsi-Mei Chung from Business Administration of College of Management at I-Shou University. Sun Yat-Sen Management Review will disclose the manuscript selection criteria, peer-reviewed procedures, and publications by end of 2018. Journal of Management (In Chinese), launched in 1984, is the leading academic journal and iconic representation of management research in Taiwan. Journal of Management publishes research in all areas of business and management. In 2000, Journal of Management (In Chinese) was selected into the Taiwan Social Sciences Citation Index (TSSCI) by Ministry of Science and Technology, R.O.C. (MOST). In 2007, Ministry of Science and Technology, R.O.C. (MOST) accredited Journal of Management (In Chinese) as the number one managerial journal among 46 others. In 2014, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of MOST rated Journal of Management (In Chinese) as the top-tier level A journal in Taiwan. With a global focus, in 2015 Journal of Management (In Chinese) was selected into the international database EBSCO, and looks forward to being selected by other internationally-renowned databases.
Working with 2017 IFERA Global Conference, Journal of Management (In Chinese) continues to support outstanding publications. The 2017 IFERA Global Conference co-chairs will recommend distinguished conference papers to Journal of Management (In Chinese) and the author's NT$3,000 submission fee will be waived. Papers considered for publication inJournal of Management (In Chinese) will follow regular submission guidelines and review processes.
Since Sun Yat-Sen Management Review and Journal of Management (In Chinese) overlaps in areas covered, in principle, distinguished finance and accounting relevant articles will be recommended to Journal of Management (In Chinese), while qualified conference papers in the general management field will be recommended to Sun Yat-Sen Management Review. The Bod Review (In Chinese)
The Bod Review, the first publication put forth by Taiwan Board of Directors, is the only publication in Taiwan to solely focus on practical implications on board of directors. It examines family businesses in terms of three aspects: family, shareholders, and board of directors. With global perspectives, The Bod Review provides the latest market information, expert critics, and international case studies to upper echelon, stockholders, service-oriented institutions, governments, academic research institutes, and others. The Bod Review targets those scholars, family business owners, CEOs, and directors who are concerned with the operations of board of directors in family businesses. Family Governance Review (In Chinese)
Family Governance Review is the second publication of Taiwan Institute of Directors. Encountering global competitions and the aging family business entrepreneurship, Chinese family businesses are facing the challenges of generation inheritances and relays. Family Governance Review explores the areas of new venture, wealth inheritance, family governance, succession, and social welfare that entrepreneurs concern. Each issue provides case studies that discuss the family governance differences between western and eastern societies. With the understanding of how western family businesses transform and heritage to next generations will be able to provide further insights for Chinese family businesses to sustain. Family Governance Review aims to provide a platform for international well-known scholars to investigate issues of family business as well as to clarify misconceptions about family governance, describe transition challenges, and identify the role of family business foundations in different regions. Quarterly Journal of Management
Quarterly Journal of Management is an academic journal dedicated to strategic management, entrepreneurship and innovation, and organization and management studies. In 2016, first issue of Quarterly Journal of Management was published in conjunction with IACMR Annual Conference at Hangzhou. Since then, the journal has risen to be included in the Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI, 2017-2018), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP Paper Check System (VPCS), WanFang Data, and Airiti Library databases. The Quarterly’s WeChat official site is the most popular of all management-related academic sites, having highly influential effects among scholars.
The editorial board of Quarterly Journal of Management is composed of 18 well-known Chinese scholars, having expertise in strategic management, entrepreneurship and innovation, and organization and management studies. Current editors-in-chief are Dr. Xinchun Li (Sun Yat Sen University, Guangzhou), Dr. Erming Xu (Renmin University of China), Dr. Yuan Li (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), and Dr. Haiyang Li (Rice University). The journal strives to be a top-tier Chinese academic journal, by involving professional scholars in double-blind peer review process to ensure publishing quality, as well as assisting authors to improve research standards via “revise and resubmit” policy.
In accordance with its emphasis on family business research, Quarterly Journal of Management has agreed to accept high-quality papers recommended by 2017 IFERA Global Conference in Taiwan at no extra charge. Though there will be no special issue arrangement via this cooperation, Quarterly Journal of Management will place priority on reviewing paper from the Conference, and then publish any papers that qualify after going through the standard “revise and resubmit” procedures.
