Advancing Gender Diversity Research in Family Business.
A Journey across Disciplines

Although gender diversity allows businesses to reduce conflict and improve performance, women still lag behind men in key strategic decision making positions. Families are in a unique position to promote greater gender equality in their businesses, thanks to early involvement of future business leaders, strong focus on values, and influence on governance structures – which can encourage a change in priorities and mindset. This workshop will provide in-depth discussion of original research papers, including work-in-progress, focusing on different theoretical and empirical approaches to gender diversity and women’s involvement in family businesses. We welcome multi-disciplinary perspectives to further develop this research area. As well as a Keynote Speech, the RDW will include an “Academics Meet Practitioners” panel with experts on the topic from entrepreneurship, corporate governance, sociology and law, as well as from practice (e.g. family business owners and representatives from industrial associations) to inspire our conversation (details will follow).

David Audretsch is a Distinguished Professor and Ameritech Chair of Economic Development at Indiana University, where he is also serves as Director of the Institute for Development Strategies. He also is an Honorary Professor of Industrial Economics and Entrepreneurship at the WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany. Audretsch's research has focused on the links between entrepreneurship, government policy, innovation, economic development and global competitiveness. He is co-author of The SevenSecrets of Germany, published by Oxford University Press. He is co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal. He was awarded the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research by the Swedish Foundation for Entrepreneurship. He has received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Augsburg, Jonköping University and the University of Siegen. Audretsch also was awarded the Schumpeter Prize from the University of Wuppertal. Audretsch serves as a member of the Advisory Board to a number of research and policy institutes, including the Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum in Stockholm, the Jackstädt Centre for Entrepreneurship in Wuppertal, Germany, and the American Center for Entrepreneurship in Washington, D.C
"From shadow to spotlight : Towards an emotions perspective on gender in family business"
Rania Labaki, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Management at the EDHEC Business School and Director of the EDHEC Family Business Centre (France). Her recent research and teaching interests revolve around the interplay between family dynamics and family business behavior, in relation with entrepreneurial, financial, social, and succession decisions. Rania has been actively involved in several international organizations dedicated to family business. Among her current appointments, she is Board Member of The International Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA), Family Business Scholar of the Cornell Smith Family Business Initiative, and Head of the scientific committee of The Family Business Network (FBN) in France. Rania also serves as Advisory Committee member of Women in Family Business (WIFB) and New York City Family Enterprise Centre (NYCFEC), Advisor of Lansberg Gersick & Associates, and Fellow member of The Family Firm Institute (FFI). Rania is also co-editor of Entrepreneurship Research Journal and member of several editorial and review boards of academic and professional journals and websites dedicated to family business, including Family Business Review, Journal of Family Business Strategy, Droit et Patrimoine, and familybusiness.org. Her work has been featured in the international media and press, including the Financial Times, Forbes India, CampdenFB, The Conversation, La Tercera, Les Echos and Le Figaro. Rania received several international awards for her academic contributions to the field of family business. She holds a PhD in Management Sciences from the University of Bordeaux in France and an MBA from the University of Saint-Esprit de Kaslik in Lebanon.
We encourage international scholars to submit their research ideas and works in progress at different stages. Given the developmental nature of the workshop, we encourage submissions of:
A) DRAFT OF PAPERS/FULL PAPERS.
The maximum length of the paper is 40 pages (including all tables, appendices and references). The minimum length of the paper is 15 pages
B) RESEARCH IDEAS/PROPOSALS/EXTENDED ABSTRACTS
The maximum length of the ideas/proposals/extended abstracts is 6 pages (8 pages including references)

• To facilitate the blind review process, remove all author-identifying information, including acknowledgements, from the main text
• Include a separate Title page with author information (name and affiliation) and acknowledgements
• Include a brief abstract (max. 150 words) and 3 keywords in the draft/full paper
• Use Times New Roman 12-pitch font, double spaced, and 1-inch (2.5 cm) margin all around. References may be single spaced. Number all of the pages
• Submissions should be in Word or PDF (two separate documents: Title page and Manuscript)
• Only submissions in English shall be accepted for review
• In case of acceptance, the author or one of the co-authors must be available to present the paper at the workshop

Call for papers – “Women in Small and Medium Sized Family Firms: Theory and Practice” (download)
Piccola Impresa / Small Business is looking for conceptual (including meta-analyses, critical literature reviews, or “state-of-the-art” articles) and/or empirical (qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods) articles that can extend our understanding about the role of women in small and medium sized family firms in ownership, management and governance positions. Articles from scholars in all areas of research and in the international research community who have a particular interest in this topic are welcome. The adoption of new and original theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches is also encouraged.
